travel advice:: santorini, greece
My unpopular opinion is that Santorini, Greece is not a beach vacation destination.! 🤠Something I did not know until I arrived.
Santorini, Greece, or Thira (in Greek), is a beautifully picturesque island; full of white buildings, and blue shutters, and rooftop pools. It is everything I thought it would be, and everything I saw in the perfectly positioned photos of infinity pools in every hotel room and sunrise floating breakfasts alike. But what it’s not, is a beach vacation.
The truth is, I’m a little spoiled. I grew up traveling back to Egypt every summer and spending a few months out of the year riding my bike a couple of blocks to the Mediterranean Sea where I’d plant myself and work on my tan for most of the day. So my ideal beach vacation is a little skewed.
We stayed in the center of the island, which I highly recommend, as you get views from both directions and a stunning look at the sunset every night. It also allowed us to do a fair amount of walking, up to the famous Blue Domed Church of Santorini on the northern end of the island (Oia). As well as down to where many bars and restaurants with rooftop patios, overlook the mountain goats and gondola that both easily disembark down the cliffside.
